Boomtown strikes as Matheson enjoys 4-win day

CHARLOTTETOWN, PE – Buckhead Ridge controlled the PEISHOA Open Trot and T H Boomtown captured the Preferred Pace on Saturday at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.

The Preferred Pace in race 13 went to T H Boomtown ($6.60) as part of a four-win day for trainer Ron Matheson. Gilles Barrieau was in the bike behind the son of Captain Crunch for owners Dr Don Ling and Wayne Macdougall of Stratford as the five-year-old gelding surged to the lead in the final quarter and powered home in 1:55.4 with a 27.1 closing quarter. Howmac Maximus (Driven by Marc Campbell) was second while Captainofrocknroll (Ken Murphy) finished third.

Matheson and Barrieau also scored in race 14 with Blood Money ($3.30) in 1:57.1 and Therealprincess ($8.10) in 1:57.3 in race 10, both for owner Dr. Mitchell Downey of New Brunswick.

Matheson’s other training win came with The Sports Desk ($2.70) in race 5 with a 1:58.2 score for driver Jason Hughes.

Barrieau also had four driving wins as he steered Brigus ($3.90) to victory in race 11 for trainer Nicholas Oakes stopping the clock in the fastest mile of the day in 1:55.

The $4,200 PEISHOA Open Trot in race 6 saw Buckhead Ridge ($2.70) dictate matters from the front for driver Marc Campbell and trainer Landon Campbell, turning back Rocket Blast (Corey MacPherson) to score in 1:57.4. Fight Song (Jason Hughes) was third. Brady Doyle owns the winning son of Nuncio.

Lady Devine ($2.30) dominated the Fillies & Mares pace in race 8, leaving to the top and cruising home in 1:56 for driver Drew Campbell’s first win in P.E.I., since 2003. The mare is trained by Jennifer Doyle who also trained race 2 winner Tenacious Ted ($3.40) who paced to a 2:00 win in line to Murphy.

Driver Hughes and trainer Ashley Gamester teamed up to win with Real Smokeshow ($11.00) in race 1, scoring in 2:00.1 and Dee ($4.00) in race 9 in 1:58.4. Hughes also won with St Charlesfireball ($5.70) in race 4 in 1:59.2 for trainer Vaughan Doyle.
