Hackett carries momentum into day two

Crystal Hackett couldn’t have asked for a much better start to Palmerston North’s two-day harness racing meeting, and she heads into today’s second instalment with confidence and momentum on her side.

Hackett had four drives on Tuesday and walked away with two winners (Change Tact and Tinkerbelle) and a third placing (Benson Dude). Today, she reunites with the same four horses and is hopeful they can deliver again.

In Race 2, the Outback Trading Mobile Pace (5.24pm), Hackett partners Benson Dude, who faces a tougher assignment from barrier seven.

“Bit of a rough draw for him compared to what he had the first day, but to his credit he actually went really well on day one, he just got held up late but flashed home quite nicely.”

The wide draw presents a challenge, but Hackett believes the gelding has the ability to measure up with the right run.

“If he could get another nice trip, or a good drag into it, then I don’t think he’s out of place.”

Miki Mirage lines up in Race 3, The Tank Guy Mobile Pace (5.59pm) after striking trouble on Tuesday. Hackett is looking for improvement, provided the mare can handle conditions better this time around.

“She probably didn’t handle the Palmy track too well, I’m just hoping she’ll get around this time.”

“If she can keep it together, on ability she could be a winner, but she is still a work in progress.”

Change Tact contests Race 4,  the Prescott Maintenance Mobile Pace (6.34pm), and Hackett is optimistic the mare can repeat the dose if she copes with the quick turnaround.

“If we can get a similar run, I think she’s a nice chance, providing she backs up well.”

“She’s never had to do that before, but she’s a big strong mare so she should do.”

Tinkerbelle steps up in trip for the A1 Appliances And Tree Fellas Handicap Trot (7.00pm), which adds another layer to the challenge.

“She goes up in distance, which isn’t 100% ideal, but she’s as honest as they come and I know she’ll try hard.”

Of her four drives, Hackett rates Change Tact as her leading chance on day two, but with momentum on her side and a strong book of drives, she’ll be hoping Tuesday’s success is only the beginning.
