Brilliant New Zealand bred mare Captains Mistress (Captaintreacherous) gave another devastating display when she outclassed a quality field of harness racing  mares in winning the Group 1$150,000 Benstud Standardbred Queen Of The Pacific at Melton on Saturday evening.

On the strength of her previous all the way wins at Menangle and Cranbourne Captains Mistress was installed a long odds on favourite even though this was her first attempt at the testing 2760 metre journey.

From her wide draw Captains Mistress was caught wide early and her stable mate Tokyo Rose was driven out to hold the early lead. However once in front she gave away the lead to Captains Mistress.

It was then a matter of driver Cameron Hart steadying her in the lead. Eye Keep Smiling who had won everything before her over the last two seasons was back on the second row and Luke McCarthy allowed her to stride up to race outside the leader.

Tokyo Rose then settled behind the leader.

Hart allowed Captains Mistress to run a fast second quarter of 27.5 seconds but she really put a space between herself and her rivals when she ran a scorching 26.6 seconds.

It was all over at the top of the home straight with Captains Mistress strolling a 25 metre win over outsider Joans Rising Star who finished on for second with Eye Keep Smiling battling on for third.

The win consolidated Hart’s opinion that she is the best mare that he has ever driven.

That was awesome. She’s a bit of a freak this one. She gives you such a great feel with the speed she’s got. She just showed the good horse she is tonight over a long trip to show stamina as well. To beat a mare like Eye Keep Smiling, I’ve got a lot of respect for her and what she’s done. To do what she’s done to her over the last couple of starts its pretty impressive.

She’s right up there no doubt. She’s probably got the most freakish ability that I’ve sat behind that’s for sure. Just the speed she’s got. She’s definitely right up there. To compare her and Swayzee its pretty hard because they’re completely different horses. But its very privileged to be sitting behind the both of them.
