Trois-Rivieres, Quebec – Latin America, unbeaten in four starts this year, puts her winning streak on the line Wednesday at the Hippodrome 3R. There is also a change in post time this Wednesday with first race post at 1:30 pm instead of 7:00 pm.
The three-year-old filly by Cantab Hall keeps improving by nearly one second in time each week and according to driver Stephane Brosseau, “She will keep on improving.”
While not eligible for the upcoming Quebec-Bred Series at 3R, Latin America has to grind it out week in, week out, usually against older competition.
This Wednesday the bay filly starts from post three and goes against a field that features two other fillies, but the rest are older mares and horses.
Purchased as a yearling for $35,000 by Jeff Gillies of Ontario, Latin America did not fare well at age 2. While she showed sub two-minute trotting speed, she did not pick up many checks racing at Mohawk and made just six starts before being turned out by trainer/driver Carl Duguay.
Then comes 2015 and with a layoff and switch in venue to the Hippodrome 3R, Latin America has come into her own.
“She is racing against too tough of a bunch right now,” Brosseau said. “But she looks pretty decent. She has got speed and a real nice trot.”
Apparently she has improved enough after her first three wins that she was purchased last week by Les Ecuries Dorleans, Inc. and Gestion Levesque of QC and is now trained by Jacques DuPont.
Last week Latin America was at her best this season, leading from start to finish by three and one-half lengths in 2:02.3.
“She does not want to make a break,” Brosseau said, “She seems very sound right now and no problems.”
Listed as the 5/2 morning line favorite, Latin America looks to be the best in the field and is the only return winner.
