Dunmanway County, Ireland – Hillside Farms, who operates a breeding facility in Leap, saw two of their homebreds win under glorious sunshine at the Gloun races on Sunday .
Hail Spartacus took the featured Grade A & B pace. Red Mischief was sent to the front in this and looked in command with five furlongs to pace as Hail Spartacus began to close, but still had five lengths to find.
With two furlongs to pace, Red Mischief seemed to hit a brick wall and driver Patrick Hill eased Hail Spartacus to the front and won by a length and a half.
Earlier in the day Hill was seen at his best when guiding Hillside Dartanian to a head victory over Ringo Lady. Both winner and runner up were in a dog fight on the final circuit with Hill just getting up on the line .
Both Hillside Dartanian and Hail Spartacus are out of the regally bred mare, Meadowbranch Katie, who is a daughter out of the all-conquering broodmare, Churchill Queen.
Hillside Farms is owned by Pete and Mim Hill, who were both on hand to see their offspring win. Patrick Hill also collected the leading driver of the day honours following his two wins.
Racing opened with another win for veteran driver John Boyle, who played a waiting game on Supreme Sunshine easing this son of Best Sunshine to the front with three furlongs to race and winning by a comfortable six lengths.
Local runner Myross Son got the loudest cheer of the day by the partisan local crowd when edging out Tyson Howard in another photo finish. The winner hit the front on the final circuit but Tyson Howard fought back in the home straight but was denied victory by a neck.
The Hitman, a winner in Drimoleague, added another win to his tally. Tims Surprise was in front for most of the journey but had to settle for second best to The Hitman, who stayed on to win by a length under a Kieran Sheehy Drive .
Best Talent is another in top form at the moment and Kieran Connolly made his race winning move with three furlongs to go, going from last to first to beat Oakwood Diamond and the luckless Scorpion.
Volcan Erem took the four runner Prix De Kinrath Le Trot. Seamus Quill came in for the spare drive as regular driver Mike Kelleher had engagements in Portmarnock Raceway. Birthday boy Quill hit the front at the start and never looked in any remote danger of defeat on this son of Kaiser Soze, who was recording his fourth winning start of the year since arriving from France. He now heads to Portmarnock next Saturday for the big televised Le Trot meeting at the North County Dublin venue.
Racing returns to Manch Raceway next Sunday with a 2.30 pm start time.
