Quick Shot and Smart Rokker shared the Sunday spotlight winning their co-feature races in the Sunday, Feb. 28 edition of Dover Downs harness racing.
Kathleen Brewer's Quick Shot posted a 1:52.3 victory in a $20,000 4&5-Year-Old Claiming pace. Ross Wolfenden scored the first of his two wins steering the Art Major-Cannae Cindy four-year-old gelding to his third win in a row for Ms. Brewer, the trainer. Manolito Montoya (Vic Kirby) finished second with Big Secret (Jim Morand) the show horse.
A major change in post positions paid off for Peter and Peter Venturini III and Brian Malone owner of Smart Rokker winning his second in three starts in a Male condtion pace. Malone trains the Rocknroll Hanover-Sass Newton gelding who won for the 20th time raising his lifetime earnings to $144,567 with his third win in nine starts this year. Tony Morgan, the second leading all-time dash winning driver, piloted his third success of the day. Layden (Ross Wolfenden) closed well to take second with Drunk On You (Allan Davis) third.
Tony Morgan had three wins, Ross Wolfenden, Jonathan Roberts and Vince Copeland had two wins each.
LUCAN HANOVER, BUSHWACKER, DAPPER DUDE MEET IN 30,000 PREFERRED MONDAY
Lucan Hanover made his first start of the year a winning one last Monday, but will find his hands full this week in the $30,000 Preferred pace on Feb. 28 at Dover Downs. Bushwacker, Dapper Dude, Mustang Art, Doctor Butch and newcomer Atta Boy Dan are among the eight starters in the feature race. The entire Monday program is the biggest card of the week in the sport. Post time is 4:30 p.m.
Lucan Hanover, who will be driven by Corey Callahan this week, registered a 1:51.2 victory by a nose last Monday. The winner held off a brilliant closing performance by Vic Kirby behind Richard Pollock’s Dapper Dude, who stormed from dead last turning for home to a just miss performance. Henderson Farms’ Bushwacker, the seasons leading money winner, was betting choice, finished out-of-the money for the first time this year. The week, Tim Tetrick returns to drive.
Max Walton and Greg Papaleo’s razor-sharp Mustang Art and Sean Bier gets a better starting position this time moving from post 7 to 5. Foulk Stable’s Sparky Mark and Jonathan Roberts closed to within a neck while Sweet Rock with Allan Davis in the bike was just a half-length behind last Monday. Not to be overlooked in the eight horse field is Ken Jacobs’ hard-hitting Doctor Butch piloted by Tony Morgan and from post 8, Weaver Bruscemi and Burke Racing’s Atta Boy Dan with Yannick Gingras arriving from Yonkers’ feature races.
On the highly competitive undercard are a $15,500, a $14,000, two $13,500, and a $12,500 pace, plus a strong $20,000 Claiming pace on the 14 race program.
Monday through Thursday racing begins at 4:30 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday are dark days.
