Parkes harness racing trainer Andrew Cassell caused a boilover in the Club Dubbo Golden Gig Heat 4 at Dubbo on Sunday evening when My Flying Spur ($17) won; securing a spot in the $9000 final that will be run this Friday.
The four-year-old gelding showed great speed on the arm, crossing comfortably from four wide on the front row before Cassell settled him down and ensured a very slowly run race.
A Mr Feelgood x Kevsbabe horse, My Flying Spur was not troubled at any part of the race and despite Caesars Rockstar ($2.10 place) threatening to run over the top in the shadows of the post, Cassell held on to record at very important victory at a very healthy price.
The mile rate of 2:04.1 highlighted just how slow the pace of the race was, and it truly was a masterful drive from Cassell to secure the win.
Parkes' Malcolm Hutchings secured third place with Caribbean Pat ($2.20), who finished with a wet sail, while the firm favourite, Jogalong Blue just couldn't find a run at any point in the race and finished fourth
Jogalong Blue's trainer John Lew lodged a protest against Caesars Rockstar for interference which was promptly dismissed, though the talented gelding is certainly not one that should be taking out of the black book after three promising runs for Lew after a long spell.
This Friday's meeting at Dubbo will be a massive night of racing, with $104,040 of prizemoney up for grabs in addition to rugs and trophies for all eight races. The $30,600 Red Ochre Classic is the feature event on the card.
