The late and great harness racing driver Greg Sugars was a passionate supporter of the Pacing for Pink fundraiser for the McGrath Foundation and his wife Jess Tubbs has ensured a lasting legacy of support for a cause close to their hearts.

Known for his class, composure and kindness, Greg was also a passionate supporter of the Pacing for Pink campaign, which raises funds for the McGrath Foundation to provide specialist breast care nurses across Australia.

In a moving gesture, Jess has donated Greg’s pink sponsored pants to be auctioned for this year’s Pacing for Pink campaign. It’s a fitting tribute to a man who quietly gave so much to the sport and the community around it.

“Greg would like to know he was still helping the cause,” Jess told Pacing for Pink organisers.

The pants — featuring sponsors Charlton Harness Racing, Larajay Farm, BetaVet Aus, Trots Geelong and HSP Advanced Equine — are now being offered to the highest bidders, with all proceeds supporting the Pacing for Pink campaign.

Harness racing’s Pacing for Pink initiative has become a key campaign on the industry’s calendar with clubs, drivers and fans turning out in pink during May each year to support breast cancer awareness and services.

Greg and Jess were always enthusiastic backers, often going out of their way to lend support.

“We have many beautiful people in our sport who show great compassion for others,” Pacing for Pink organiser Marg Watson said.

“The beautiful Jess Tubbs is one of those people; a lady I have always admired for her personal qualities, strength and amazing achievements at Larajay Farm with Greg,” Watson said.

“Even in her darkest hour Jess’ compassion and thought for others shines through.”

Supporters can submit their offers for Greg’s pink pants through the Pacing for Pink Facebook page, or by contacting Marg Watson directly on 0409 401 189 or via mwatson3644@gmail.com. Bidders can choose to remain anonymous, but contact details are required.

Bidding closes at 9 p.m. on Wednesday, June 4. Updates on offers will be posted on the Pacing for Pink page in the lead-up to the closing date.
