Harness Racing New South Wales has released its integrity update for December and the governing body has a number of investigations underway.
That month the HRNSW Integrity Department obtained 930 race-day samples and a further 124 out-of-competition samples were obtained from horses in the 2021 Inter Dominion Series.

New Inquiries
- 20 December 2021 ā Mr Leigh Davis – HRNSW Stewards have commenced an investigation in relation to a report from the Australian Government National Measurement Institute (NMI) that Cobalt above the threshold of 100 micrograms per litre in urine was detected in the urine sample taken from RAINBOW TITAN following its win in race 6, the CHRISTY PARK PACE (1720 metres) conducted at Young on Tuesday 22 June 2021.
- 20 December 2021 ā Mr Nathan Turnbull – HRNSW Stewards have commenced an investigation in relation to a report from the Australian Racing Forensic Laboratory (ARFL) that Salicylic Acid above the threshold of 6.5 micrograms per millilitre in plasma was detected in the blood sample taken from HAPPY AS following its win in race 3, the APG 2022 BUYERS BENEFITS PACE (1720 metres) conducted at Dubbo on Friday 22 October 2021.
- 30 December 2021 ā Mr Ray Walker – HRNSW Stewards have commenced an investigation in relation to a report from the Australian Racing Forensic Laboratory (ARFL) that Lignocaine, 3ā-hydroxy lignocaine and norlignocaine were detected in the urine sample taken from the horse MISTER REA following its win in race 6, the NSW BREEDERS CHALLENGE 2YO COLTS & GELDINGS HEAT (1720 metres) conducted at Young on Tuesday 14 September 2021.
- 30 December 2021 ā Mr Michael Muscat – HRNSW Stewards have commenced an investigation in relation to a report from the Australian Racing Forensic Laboratory (ARFL) that Total Plasma Carbon Dioxide above the threshold was detected in the pre-race blood sample taken from KNIGHT WALKER prior to it running in race 1, the BLING IT ON @ COBBITTY EQUINE FARM PACE (1730 metres) conducted at Bathurst on Wednesday 22 December 2021.
Appeal Decision
- 15 December 2021ā Mr Seaton Grima appealed the decisions of HRNSW Stewards to suspend him for a period of 14 days (9 September 2021), 14 days (5 October 2021) and 21 days (9 October) for breaches of AHRR 163(1)(a)(iii) (Causing Interference). The appeals were dismissed and the suspension of 14 days (5 October 2021) and 21 days (9 October 2021) were imposed. In relation to the offence on 9 September 2021, a suspension of 14 days (suspended for 12 months) was imposed on the condition that Mr Grima attend at the times and places directed to him by the Regulatory Review Panel of the HRNSW Mentoring Program and that he complete that program in accordance with the directions of the Regulatory Review Panel.
- 15 December 2021ā Mr Blake Hughes appealed the decision of HRNSW Stewards to suspend him for a period of 21 days for a breach of AHRR 163(1)(a)(iii) (Causing Interference) when driving ROCKNROLL TONY in Race 6, the TAB APP PACE (2030 metres) conducted at Newcastle on Friday 8 October 2021. The severity appeal was upheld and the penalty was amended to a 19 day suspension.
Integrity Information
- During the month of December, HRNSW Integrity department obtained 930 Race day samples.
In addition, 124 Out of Competition samples were obtained from horses entered in the 2021 Inter Dominion Series.
As per normal HRNSW procedure all samples have been submitted for analysis.
