A sweet filly for leading stud man

Brian Rossiter is one of Australia’s most experienced and competent studmasters and horsemen. 

The foreman of the breeding arm at Cobbitty Equine Farm, Brian has worked at Victoria’s premier stud Alabar Bloodstock, as well as leading stud farms in France, Northern Ireland and North America. 

“I reckon I’ve handled more than 100 stallions over 40 years,” Brian said. 

And, in early April, he is heading back to America to work at Blue Chip Farms, New York, the home of Bettor’s Delight, Chapter Seven and exciting newcomer Cannibal, and Diamond Creek Farm, where Sweet Lou, Always B Miki, Pebble Beach and Confederate head a select sire list. 

“I’m looking to do dual hemisphere work – I’ll do Cobbitty Equine here and Diamond Creek and Blue Chip over there,” Rossiter said. 

Besides his studmaster duties, Rossiter has compiled rather a notable record as a broodmare owner. 

He bred the very successful matrons She’s Cool (dam of 10 winners), Pat Petulus (9 winners) and Ninja Star (7 winners) all from the same family. 

Their descendants include horses the calibre of Allwood’s Chief, Menin Gate, For Real Life, Smooth Showgirl, Rocknrolla, Astral Francais, Exhilarator and Teo Enteo, to name only a few. 

“All up the horses from this family have won around $3million,” Brian stated. 

Rossiter has a single entry in the 2024 Australian Pacing Gold sale at Warwick Farm on Sunday, February 25. 

It is Lot 338, a lovely bay filly by the siring sensation Sweet Lou from the former smart racemare Janbob (12 wins). 

She’s a half-sister to two Group winners in the Vicbred 4YO champion Youranut ($140,054) and the Victoria Sapling Stakes and Central Victorian Championship winner Little Peanut ($153,648). 

“She’s a tall and athletic filly with no white on her unlike most of the Sweet Lou’s,” Rossiter said. “She’s a quick learner and boy can she move!”   

“I’m hoping she’s my meal ticket to America,” Brian quipped.
