He is no stranger to winning Group 1 races as Greg Sugars has been a harness racing driver for most of his life.
But tonight he achieved a dream – a dream he has wanted for so long ā an Inter Dominion Grand Final winner.
The 37-year-old reinsman achieved the moment with Maori Law in the Inter Dominion Trotting Championship Grand Final at Menangle tonight.
That was Sugarsā 47th Group 1 winner.
āIām on top of the world,ā said Sugars.
āIt was a strange sort of race, I had so much time to think and itās a long way up that straight.
āEmmett and Richard (Brosnan – trainers) have done a fantastic job with him.
āThis horse has tactical speed and heās tough.
āIām already on cloud nine but still have one to go.ā
Sugars will drive Triple Eight in the Inter Dominion Pacing Championship two races later.
As for Maori Law, the eight-year-old gelding is by Lawman.
He is trained by father and son combination of Richard and Emmett Brosnan.
Richard won the 1979 Inter Dominion at Addington with No Response.
āItās unbelievable,ā said Emmett.
āIāve watched videos of Dad winning the Inter Dominion and to do it together, itās a dream come true . . . someone needs to pinch me.ā
Maori Law started from barrier five and after Majestic Man found the front, Sugars urged his drive three-wide and to the lead where he remained.
The last four quarters of the 3009m were 30.7, 30.4, 28.4 and 27.9 seconds.
The mile rate was 1:59.4 – a new record for the track.
Majestic Man finished second and then came Just Believe and Tough Monarch.
