Amy ready to take over

It’s been several years since her father Neil was a dominant force at harness racing’s Eugowra Canola Cup.

Now Amy Day is hoping to return to the area and take up where her father left off when she heads to Cowra on Sunday for their TAB Carnival of Cups meeting.

Amy is regarded as one of the leading female reinswomen in New South Wales and will team up with Corey Parker, for whom she has had considerable success.

The pair has two favoured runners engaged at the meeting with Jimmyjoe (Heston Blue Chip) to contest the TABApp Club Menangle Country Series Heat and The Stain (For A Reason), the Cowra Tri-Tech Cup.

Away from the racetrack, Amy has become much sort-after by some of the biggest stables in the state to have their yearlings broken in.

Based near the Goulburn Paceway, Day shares a training complex with her father and has anywhere up to 15 youngsters in her care to break in while also training a small team of racehorses.

“My work with the young ones definitely keeps me busy,” said Amy.

“I do most of it alone, but I do have wonderful support from my family.

“I am really lucky to be able to work with some of the best-bred stock in Australia.

“Ideally, moving forward I would like to employ some staff and grow my business, breaking-in and educating the young ones.

“But for now, I am happy with what I am doing, although it gets tiring at times.”

The Stain will take on a smart field in this afternoon’s feature and if he is to win, will have to overcome the might of champion trainer Steve Turnbull and his daughter Amanda, who between them have five runners in the race.

The gelding has not raced since finishing eighth in the Riverina Championships, but did win a heat of the series.

“The Stain is a very classy horse, but he will most likely start form the inside of the second row, which is not ideal,” said Day.

“If the race is truly run, he will be charging home.

“Jimmyjoe is also very talented and has drawn well in the Club Menangle Heat.

“I will attempt to lead on him and if that happens, he will take some running down.

“I always know Corey’s horses are fit and ready to do their best and that gives me plenty of confidence.”
