Sydney pacer Smaltest certainly made up for his mistakes in an impressive trial at Tabcorp Park Menangle today.
The two-year-old Sweet Lou colt rated his trial in 1:50.2 – faster than current Australasian mile race record for that age group.
And that is 1:50.3 which is held by Bar Room Banta.
Smaltesemade amends after racing erratically in a heat of the Breeders Challenge heat at Penrith last Thursday week and was subsequently stood down one trial. Click here to watch that replay.
He returned to the trials the following Monday at Penrith and galloped in the official hit-out.
Smaltese needed to pass a trial to take part in his Breeders Challenge heat at Menangle on Tuesday and at his last attempt, he did more than what he had too for trainer-driver Brian Portelli.
He rolled through the quarters in 26.6, 28.4, 28.2 and 27 seconds.
