Barooga brand returns to Tassie Sale with two well related Yearlings

The Barooga prefix has been a familiar sight on Tasmanian racecards since the 1990s, carried by a string of quality pacers bred and raced by Ian and Vicki Abraham.

After taking two colts to the Quercus Park yearling sale for the first time last year — and walking away pleased with the results — the Abrahams are heading back to Carrick in 2026 with another pair of youngsters.

Their first offering is Lot 3, a filly by Canadian three-year-old star Pebble Beach, out of the unraced Four Starzzz Shark mare Barooga Daisy. The filly is a half-sister to former topliner Barooga Bullet, a 51-time winner who claimed 33 of those victories in North America.

“She’s not over big, but she’s well put together,” said breeder Ian Abraham.

The second of the draft is Lot 7, a gelding by Stay Hungry, the Somebeachsomewhere stallion making a strong impression in both hemispheres. He is out of Barooga Rock, the Tasmanian Three-Year-Old Filly of the Year who captured the Bandbox Stakes among her five career wins.

“This fella’s dam and grand-dam (Barooga Minnie) were both three-year-old fillies of their year,” Abraham noted. “We sold the Barooga Minnie colt last year for $27,500, and we’ve kept a Bulldog Hanover filly at home.”

Both yearlings are Tasbred eligible, with the Stay Hungry gelding also Vicbred eligible.

With just 36 lots catalogued, the Tasmanian sale remains a boutique but consistently productive marketplace — one that continues to uncover value and the occasional hidden gem. Coupled with Tasmania’s strong prizemoney and bonus structures, the sale once again shapes as a compelling opportunity for buyers.
