Top line four year Bay of Biscay (Somebeachsomewhere) finally broke his big race hoodoo when he led all the way to take out the $250,000 Group 1 Cordina Chickens Chariots of Fire at Menangle last night.
Although he was voted Australian 3YO colt and gelding of the year, Bay of Biscay was placed in both the NSW and Queensland Derbies as well as a close second in the Eureka in September.
BAY OF BISCAY | CHARIOTS OF FIRE REPLAY
Confidently supported into favouritism on the strength of his ideal barrier draw Bay of Biscay pinged to the lead and from then on it was a matter of driver Cameron Hart nursing him along. Nonetheless he didn’t have it all his own way as he ran fast quarters of 26.9, 28.7, 26.8 and 26.7 seconds to keep his rivals running.

The Queensland trained Charge Ahead was perfectly driven by Robert Morris who secured the one out and one back trail with Major Hot having the trail behind the leader. It was obvious that those in second half of the pack would have trouble catching the leaders and Bay of Biscay cleared away under vigorous driving. Charge Ahead and Major Hot tried hard but had to be content with the minor placings.
The eye catching run was that Our Luciano who came from last to come along the rails to rocket home in fourth position.
Cameron Hart reflecting on the event stated
“I’m so happy for the horse. He deserves a race like this. It’s been great for the owners who have had faith in me. I ran the sections I wanted. I was turning for home and feeling very confident”. “He was massive as a three year old and he’s come back better. And perhaps he’ll go one better in the Eureka.”
Further he praised the Chariots of Fire series. “Every year it’s a cracking field. The best horses run and then come into open grade. It’s great to be part of it”.
In a surprising twist connections of Bay of Biscay declined an invitation for the Miracle Mile. They have decided to concentrate on the Eureka in September.
In another development one of the first slots for the 2025 the Soho Standardbreds spokesman Rob Watson indicated that Bay of Biscay was their selection.
