The $12,000 Meeker Fillies and Mares series headlines the nine-race Hobart harness racing card on Sunday night, where Rowella trainer Paul Carlson is hoping his mare Better Amour (Betterthancheddar) can record her first win of the season.
The daughter of Betterthancheddar has won five of her 37 starts but has been runner-up on 12-occasions, including at her most recent outing last week when flashing home late to finish three metres behind talented three-year-old Ideal Pace.
āShe went good last week. If she got out a bit earlier, she would have finished a bit closer,ā said Carlson.
Better Amour was third-up on that occasion, and the trainer believes there may have been some issues with her first two runs back from a spell.
āHer first couple of runs back, I think she may have been tying up a bit but I think I have that all sorted out,ā explained the trainer.
The hobby trainer has also been trying to keep the mare away from other horses in his stable.
āI have been keeping her well away from all my other horses as we have had a bit of a virus go though,ā explained Carlson.
Better Amour has drawn inside the second-row in the 2090m event and Carlson expects a forward showing.
āIf she gets the right run, and the way she has been working, she will be hard to beat,ā Carlson said.
The field includes Most Perfect Major, who led all the way to win the recent Leis Fillies and Mares Series in Launceston, and Iden Miss Lucy, who has won five races this season.
Another highlight on the Hobart card is theĀ Rokeby Cricket Club DiscretionaryĀ over 2090m which looks to be a great contest where The Shallows is the 30m back marker after a dominant win in Launceston when resuming from a spell on 7 June.
The action commences at 17:14 and can be seen on Sky Racing 1 and TasracingTV.
