Majestic Cruiser’s victory in Saturday night’s Garrards Joe and Michael Ilsley Memorial was one of sheer satisfaction for harness racing trainer Jason Grimson.
After contesting last month’s Miracle Mile where he ran a luckless fourth, Majestic Cruiser proved on Saturday night why he is recognised as one of the State’s best pacers currently racing with his dour staying performance.
The gelding worked hard mid-race to find the cheap seat outside the leader and runner up Alto Orlando before gaining the upper hand down to the wire to score by a half neck, rating a smart 1:53.8 for the 2300 metre trip.
“He is a very nice horse.” said Grimson.
“I thought he was very unlucky not to have finished closer in the Miracle Mile as he locked wheels with 300 metre to travel, causing Cam to have to change course a few times in the run home.
“So, for him to come out and show his superiority on Saturday night is very satisfying for both our stable and his owners.”
Sent out as a well-supported favourite, Majestic Cruiser was driven confidently by Cameron Hart from start to finish, who went on to drive a winning treble.
“I spoke to Cam before the race, and we agreed that he was the best horse in the race, so it was an obvious decision in the end to drive him with vigour.”
“We will now aim him for the Wagga Cup on Easter Saturday. I am taking a team down there for the feature races over the carnival. Sugar Apple will contest the Derby and the Cup looks ideal for Majestic Cruiser.”
Goulburn Harness Racing Club will conduct a six race program this afternoon and local trainer Brad Hewitt has a good book of drives.
Hewitt will drive in five races and partners long odds-on favourite Majestic Trio in the opening race.
The former Kiwi square gaiter has only tasted defeat once since landing in Australia back in January.
“He is a really strong trotter with a lot of bottom,” Hewitt explained.
“Today’s race looks suitable for him. He is dropping in class from his last run where he ran third at Menangle.”
“And he is back on his home track so as long as he brings his best manners today, he will be hard to beat.”
