Bold move pays off for young horseman

It was just last year young horseman Corey Peterson decided to pack up his bags and move to the other side of Australia to further his harness racing career.

The 21-year-old left Western Australia bound for the bright lights of Menangle.

He set up a team at the Menangle Park Training Centre and has notched some winners in the sulky.

However, his victory with Tintin In America mare Smooth Rye at Menangle tonight will be his most memorable since the move.

It was his first metropolitan training win and a nostalgic one at that courtesy of the mare’s success in the Group 3 Taniya Harris OAM Stakes.

Smooth Rye extended her record to 12 wins in 39 starts.

“I had this mare back home so it’s great to get a win with her here, it’s like having a piece of home with me,” said Peterson.

“That was my first training win here on a Saturday night.

“She had a good record back home and thought she would race well over here and the owners were more than happy to race her in Sydney.”

Peterson’s first win in the sulky at Menangle was on board tonight’s Miracle Mile aspirant Majestic Cruiser last July.

The young horseman has a team of four horses in work and is hoping to grow his team.

He also works alongside experience horseman Darren Binskin.

Peterson has trained 50 winners and driven 202 winners.
