It took longer than expected, but promising harness racing youngster Buzz Bomb (Art Major) has broken his maiden status.

Costing himself victory upon debut, Buzz Bomb was runner-up at his first three starts for trainer Paul Cavallaro.

Returning to Globe Derby for his fourth outing yesterday (Jun 26), the son of Art Major proved too slick for his older rivals.

Naturally pleased with the two-year-old’s performance, Cavallaro has set his sights on the Southern Cross series later in the season.

“He’s actually a pretty nice type, but is still so green,” Cavallaro said. “If he was more tractable he would have won before now,

“He cost himself the win at his first start when he galloped from the pole, lost about 40 metres and was only beaten four!

“At the moment he is racing free-legged as he absolutely hates hopples, but I’m about to give him a spell and may try them on him again next time in.

“He’ll have a good long break before I get him going for the Southern Cross.”

With Cavallaro’s sister, Angela Chapman, holding the reins, Buzz Bomb was settled midfield from barrier six as One More Star led from the pole.

Taken three-wide along the back straight, Buzz Bomb sprinted to the front approaching the home turn before cruising a six-and-a-half metre win from Eastbro Oliver.

White Star Sammy was a metre away third in 1:59.7 over 1800 metres.

“I’ve been happy with each of his runs, but that was a pretty polished performance,” Cavallaro said.

“He’s still got plenty to learn, but a handful of runs and now a good break should do him the world of good.”
