Cain cracks milestone on home soil

Redcliffe was the second harness racing track reinsman Leonard Cain ever won a race at so it was fitting that he achieved a milestone there today.

Driver Leonard Cain.

Cain notched up 300 winners after guiding the Ron Sallis-trained Rocknroll Dude to victory.

“I thought I would be getting close to the mark but wasn’t sure,” said the 21-year-old.

“It was fitting to get the result back home.”

Born in Queensland, Cain began his driving career in the Sunshine State before relocating to Sydney to work for trainer Noel Daley in March 2019.

When Daley decided to return to the United States, Cain was quickly snapped up by the Cobbitty Equine Farm, which is now headed by trained Belinda McCarthy.

It was with that stable Cain landed the biggest race of his career so far, when winning the Group 2 Queensland Cup with Cruz in 2020.

Cain moved back home last April and continues to work for the Cobbitty Equine Farm’s satellite stable under trainer Ricky Thurlow.

“I’m permanently back in Queensland now,” said Cain.

For the record, Cain drove a double at the first meeting he ever drove at on September 23, 2016 at Albion Park.

Those wins were with Passionate Fella and Sheer Strength.

This was part of a training treble for Sallis who also won with Jukebox Jet and Royal Obsession.

Those pacers were driven by Lachie Manzelmann who also drove a treble, also winning with Charm Offensive which he trains himself.
