Redcliffe trainer Donny Smith looks to have unearthed a promising pacer as Calling Buddy (Rock N Roll Heaven) made it five wins in succession with an effortless all the way win in the Band 5 Pace at Albion Park last night.
Calling Buddy was having his first start at 2138 metres as his four previous wins were all over the flying 1660 metre journey but still started a long odds on favourite.
This didnāt seem to concern driver Pete McMullen who allowed Calling Breeze to stride to the front. The only other runner under double figure odds O B Legal was well back in the field while Tiger by The Tail had the trail behind the leader.
McMullen allowed Calling Buddy more stride along the back straight and he broke away from his rivals. Mossdale Terry who had been three back on the rails finished gamely but Calling Buddy had just under 5 metres to spare and O B Legal was doing his best work for third placing.
CALLING BUDDY REPLAY
Calling Buddy was prepared early in his career from his younger days by well known Victorian identities Gary and Debbie Quinlan who are based in Drouin West.
Smith took over the training of Calling Buddy and he first raced in November Ā at Redcliffe for an unlucky second when caught wide in the run. However he is firing on all cylinders and has now been going through the classes.
Last night he rated 1.53.7 which suggests that the five year old gelding has the potential to reach open class where he has the ability to make his presence felt.
