Young gun harness racing trainer Jason Grimson says it’s time to dethrone the King.
Having taken the conservative approach with his renowned speedster Boncel Benjamin on night one of the Inter Dominion, Grimson has a very different attitude heading into round two at Bathurst on Wednesday night.
“We decided it was best to take a sit on King Of Swing at Menangle because it was the start of the series and the race was over 2400m,” Grimson said.
“This is a whole different story at Bathurst. There’s a lot more in our favour. It’s time to have a throw at the stumps and have a red-hot go at beating the ‘King’.”
Grimson, who has been a revelation in NSW training ranks over the past 12 months, is certain Boncel Benjamin will zoom straight to the front from gate five.
“He’ll lead and he’ll just keep running. I think he can run around a 1min 51sec mile (the track record is 1min 52.3sec for 1730m),” he said.
“If King Of Swing can come across from eight, sit outside us and beat us then all credit to him.
“Boncel has come through that first heat run really well and that’s given us the confidence to have a serious crack at Bathurst in a race which really suits him.”
Grimson is also upbeat about Majestic Cruiser’s back row draw (gate 10) at Bathurst against opening night star Expensive Ego and others.
“I quite like the draw. He can balance-up and come with one long run and he’ll be very strong at the finish. If they run along early, he’ll be right in it,” he said.
Grimson is adamant Majestic Cruiser can win the final.
“His run was enormous on the first night and he’s the sort of horse who will keep improving through the series,” he said.
“He loves Menangle and is such a great stayer the 3009m of the final is made for him.”
In the trotting series, champion driver Anthony Butt expects series favourite Majestic Man to continue on his winning way.
“Everything tells me he’ll get a lot of benefit from that first heat run,” he said.
“Sure, he probably should’ve won it a bit easier, but I like the fact he felt all-out at the 100m and just found a way to win.
“He’s come through it well and the draw has gone his way again. He’ll lead for sure and around Bathurst, over the sprint trip which he loves, he’s going to be very hard to run down.”
