Captain Hammerhead ‘good as gold’ after health scare

Captain Hammerhead (Captaintreacherous) is ‘as good as gold’ according to harness racing trainer David Moran after suffering an irregular heartbeat at Menangle last week.

The four-year-old was chasing one of the final Eureka spots in the Racenet Discovery Stakes – a race setup by the TAB to find a replacement runner to fill their slot, after initial pick Frankie Ferocious was withdrawn.

The Nathan Jack-driven gelding suffered an irregular heartbeat and struggled to run out the 2300m trip finishing in the second-half of the field.

“He had a heart fibrillation where their heart goes out of rhythm and it affects their performance quite severely,” Moran said.

“They don’t really know what caused it and it can be a range of different things, hopefully it doesn’t happen again.”

Since the medical episode the son out of Rogers Passion has been back in work and is set to make a return via the trials.

“He is as good as gold now, he seems better,”  he said. “We just had an easy week and we are back to normal now and we can soon sit down and see what we are going to target.

“We will probably trial him next week. We will be back to Melton in a fortnight or so, but we just have to see how he goes.”

Captain Hammerhead has amassed almost $250,000 in his 11-wins from 27-starts.
