Victorian horseman David Moran and his pacer Captain Hammerhead (Captaintreacherous) will be thrust into the media spotlight after being the horse selected by slot holder John Singleton as his harness racing representative in The TAB Eureka.Ā
Moran and Captain Hammerheadās owner Domenic Martello were informed of gaining a berth in the race after the three-year-old took out the $50,000 The Singo at Menangle.Ā
The high profile Sydney based advertising mogul had the choice of any runner in the race however Moran was always quietly confident Captain Hammerhead would be selected should he be victorious.Ā
āI had a bit of an inkling and then John Singleton let it slip at the presentation after the race,ā Moran said.Ā
Captain Hammerhead enjoyed a cosy run four back along the pegs before Moran pulled out and landed on the one out one back trail with 800 metres to travel.Ā
Captain Hammerhead ($4.60) issued his challenge half way down the long Menangle home straight and the son of Captaintreacherous forged clear over the concluding stages to score from Naturally Gifted and Heza Son Of Agun.Ā
Moran said he knew the start could be a concern from the pole.Ā
āItās a tricky draw barrier one at the 2400 metre start at Menangle as the outside horses get a fly but you always seem to get a run,Ā so I wasnāt that concerned when I was four back on the inside,ā he said.Ā
CAPTAIN HAMMERHEAD REPLAY
Moran believes Captain Hammerhead will prove competitive in the worldās richest harness race.Ā
āBeing a three-year-old he will draw well and then I can drive him conservatively with no pressure and he has a good sprint so he will be thereabouts,ā he said.Ā
Moran admitted The TAB Eureka hasnāt been a long term plan for the horse.Ā
āTo be honest it was never on the radar until he won The Nutrien Final last week and then Alex Allchin suggested I should come up for The Singo,ā he said.
