Favourite Don Hugo could not hold out Ardens Ace at the start but immediately after Don Hugoās driver Luke McCarthy whipped out to retake the lead. However the other West Australian pacer Tenzing Bromac was racing outside the leader and kept some pressure on Don Hugo.Ā
Meanwhile Captains Knock who had secured the one out and two back trail from the second row took off in the straight for the bell but could not get across. Driver Brad Hewitt was then able to drop back for the one out and one back trail and this proved to be the winning move of the race.Ā
Don Hugo could not shake off the field in the final bend and Captains Knock came with a well timed burst in the centre of the track. However in a barnstorming finish outsiders Terry and Dangerous flew home but Captains Knock prevailed by a head from Terry and Dangerous. Don Hugo finished fifth but will improve on that performance as the series progresses.Ā
CAPTAINS KNOCK REPLAY
Driver Brad Hewitt was satisfied with the winning performance.
āIt wasnāt good for a bit. But we were lucky enough. They were going so slowly and I was hoping to get outside the leader but it all worked out. Heās just a perfect little racehorse and had a great will to win. Heās got good speed and you can put him anywhere in a raceā.
Hewitt indicated confidence for the remainder of the series given the versatility of Captains Knock. He will go to Bathurst for the second round full of confidence.Ā
