IT has been a huge week in harness racing throughout the Western Districts with the Eugowra Harness Racing Club concluding another successful Canola Cup Carnival on Monday afternoon.
And for the second year in succession, the $30,000 Final was taken out by a Bathurst trained pacer, namely the Jason Hewitt- trained Chiseled (Huntsville), who followed on from last seasonās winner Racing Time for Amanda Turnbull.
Chiseled was bred by long-term harness racing devotee John Ryan, who races the gelding in partnership with Jason Hewittās partner Grainne Teirnan.
Ryan struggled to contain his emotions following the win and in his post-race speech after accepting the winnerās trophy from sponsor Rod Smith he was full of praise of Hewittās efforts to have his pacer spot-on to claim the race that every owner in the district dreams of winning.
āIt is nice to win any race,ā said Ryan.
āBut to win a Canola Cup is something I will cherish for the rest of my lifeā.
Jason Hewitt was equally proud of the achievement and followed on from his father Bernie, who has previously won the Cup three times.
āI am just so proud of this horse and relieved that he has reached the expectations we had of him,ā said Jason.
āIt has not been an easy ride to keep Chiseled fit.
āHe has had niggling problems throughout his two seasons of racing, so it is a credit to him that he has now won seven, including two feature races.ā
CHISELED REPLAY
Jason will resume his role as the Bathurst track curator tonight when his club hosts a nine-race program.
As usual, Jasonās dad Bernie has a big team engaged in the meeting, including Our Goat in Race 2.
The two-year-old is stepping up against older horses tonight in his bid to make it four wins on the bounce with Doug Hewitt taking the reins.
Hewitt senior takes a strong hand into the Bourkes Horse Rugs 2yo Pace with four runners, all appearing to have sound chances.
Belinda McCarthy will make a rare trip to Bathurst tonight from her Cobbitty base with five runners.
