Connections hope Bruzer keeps saluting

Connections of Bruzer (Captaintreacherous) hope his recent drought-breaking harness racing victory is the beginning of a steady flow of wins.

Proving too good at Globe Derby last week, Bruzer registered his first triumph since scoring in Penrith on April 22, 2021 when trained by Kevin Pizzuto.

Transferred to South Australian horsewoman Franca Carbone last May, the son of Captaintreacherous was among the placegetters during seven of his previous 14 locals starts.

Driven by David Smith, Bruzer enjoyed the ideal one-one trip before accounting for Jilliby Mistress and Falcons Lad in 1:59.3 over 1800 metres.

“I was rapt when he broke the drought, especially for the owners as they’ve had him for a few years,” Carbone said. “He had been running some good races and was due for a win.

“They’ve waited a while for that second win, so it was great.

“With a bit of luck, they won’t have to wait as long for the next one.”

Bruzer will get his chance to provide that highly-anticipated “next one” when he returns to Globe Derby tonight.

With Smith to take the reins once more, Bruzer has drawn barrier five.

TAB Fixed Odds have the six-year-old listed on the fifth line of betting at $7.50 in a “wide open race”.

Bad Boy Carter heads the market at $3.10 from gate six.

“The draw is not ideal for him, but it is what it is,” Carbone said. “There is too much speed on his inside for him to go forward, so hopefully he can slot into a good trail not too far off the speed.

“He has pulled up great from last win…I’ve never really had problems with him that way thankfully…and his work has been really good, now he just needs luck in the run.”
