Dewar owes debt to champion mare

Highly respected breeder Dr Ed Dewar has scaled back his Whitby Falls operation from the heady days when he imported US stallions and had a big team of classic winning youngsters in his stable.

But he has kept a select few mares – most tracing back to his incredible broodmare Remit – with the elite Whitby bloodlines.

The NZ-bred Remit was a tough race mare, winning 18 of her 109 starts and $92,000 in stakes.

But she far-exceeded her race performances in the breeding barn, where she produced eight winners of 97 races and more than $835,000 in stakes.

Remit’s descendants read like a who’s who of WA racing in the 1980s and 90s.

Champion filly Whitby’s Miss Penny ($568K), WA Derby winner Ace Of Whitby ($317K), Whitby Timer ($314K) and Whitby Heritage ($201K) and 1993 Golden Slipper winner Whitbys Merit ($168K) are just a few of the stars to trace to the broodmare gem.

And the famous bloodlines continue to produce top flight pacers.

Whitbys Merit produced 11 winners of more than $870,000.

And Whitbys Miss Penny left Australian broodmare of the year Sexy Lexy Whitby, who left nine winners including champion mare Ima Spicey Lombo ($483K).

Delightful Jade, a great grand daughter of Remit, produced last year’s NSW Derby and APG Gold Bullion winner Soho Spectre.

Dewar-bred horses have won 1190 races, which puts him third on the all-time career wins for WA breeders.

He will present two youngsters at the 2025 APG Perth Yearling Sale on March 2. Both hail from the Remit family.

Lot 417 will be Whitby Falls’ only filly in the sale, a yearling by raging hot sire Huntsville from four-time winner Remit Me Whitby (1.58.5, $34K). It is her first foal.

Remit Me Whitby is a full sister to tough gelding Our Zak Whitby (1.50.4, $409K), winner of 32 races – eight as a 2YO and 3YO.

Her dam, Zerina Whitby (1.55.6, $106K), won 15 races and left seven winners. She is a another daughter of Whitbys Merit.

Lot 424 is a powerfully built colt by exciting young sire Stay Hungry from unraced American Ideal mare Pennies For Whitby, a grand daughter of Whitbys Merit.

Unfortunately, his first offering (Lot 386) – the only Bettors Delight colt in the sale – from 2YO Diamond Classic placegetter Prix de Whitby, has been withdrawn.
