It has been a night (Jul. 16) of upsets at Queensland’s harness racing headquarters Albion Park and Art Major mare Town Echo continued the trend.
The Jack Trainor-prepared four-year-old won the Garrards The Golden Girl at starting odds of $81.
Despite knowing his mare’s ability, the victory even caught Trainor by surprise.
“When there’s a $1.20 pop in the race and you’re the outsider you don’t think it’s going to be easy but it just goes to show, anything can happen in the race,” said Trainor.
“During the run I thought I was a strong place chance on how she felt.
“Full credit to my mare she dug in deep and it was a satisfying win.”
Town Echo landed a sweet spot in the running line while the race favourite Maajida was buried away three back on the pegs after getting crossed from barrier one.
Victorian mare Momentslikethese led and the quarters were 28.2, 30.3, 28.1 and 27.3 seconds playing out perfectly for Town Echo who beta the leader by a neck.
The mile rate was 1:53.9 in the 1660m feature.
“I was pretty rapt with that,” said Trainor.
TOWN ECHO REPLAY
That was the 28-year-old’s sixth Group 1 win with all of his victories at that level in features for mares or fillies.
Trainor other Group 1 wins include two Ladyship Miles with Stylish Memphis and the New South Wales Oaks, Breeders Challenge and Bathurst Gold Bracelet with Anntonia.
