It is fitting that a lady with the surname French took out harness racing’s Haras des Trotteurs Australasian Young Drivers’ Championship.
Victorian reinswoman Tayla French won this year’s series in Victoria with a win in the final heat securing the title.
French had the upper hand on her rivals with the series held in her home state and was successful in the final heat with the Art Major gelding Major Watson at Melton tonight (Dec. 10).
“It’s a pretty good feeling especially on Inter Dominion night,” said French.
“I knew I was a good chance going into tonight with the draw.”
Major Watson started from barrier one and after gaining the run behind the leader, came out to cause a massive upset at odds of $81.
With the final heat coming down to the wire, the final point score was:
Tayla French (VIC) 72
Sam Thornley (NZ) 69
Emily Suvaljko (WA) 58
Brendan Barnes (Qld) 54
Sarah O’Reilly (NZ) 53
Crystal Hackett (NZ) 50
Sam Pascoe (SA) 50
Jordan Chibnall (Tasmania) 40
Cam Hart (NSW) 40
