Globe Derby Park racing review 14th October

Tough three-year-old filly Delightfull Tammy (Bettor’s Delight) added another prize to her treasure chest with an outstanding harness racing victory in the 2023 TASB Mermaid Stakes (1800m) at Globe Derby Park on Saturday.

Despite covering ground throughout, Delightfull Tammy, backed from $1.35 into $1.12 favourite, proved too strong for her rivals winning by seven metres from Lolita ($10) with Sunshineanrainbows ($9), 8-1/2 metres away third.

Trained by Toby Ryan at Roseworthy, the three-year-old gave him a third win in the Mermaid having previously won with Theeyeshaveit (2015) and Modern Zodiac (2019). For driver Lisa Ryan, it was her second having been in the sulky with Modern Zodiac.

Punter who jumped into the short odds might have been tensing up early when driver Lisa Ryan was caught three wide early from barrier five and allowed the filly to balance up and drift back towards the tail of the field.

Once the leaders sorted out their position she allowed Delightfull Tammy to stride forward and find the position outside the leader Sunshineanrainbows.

Lolita was sitting back in the running line with reinsman Wayne Hill watching all the activity up front.

When the pressure came on past the 500 metres, Lolita sprinted quickly and loomed three wide and looked to have the momentum to go to the lead but Delightfull Tammy found when asked for more and went clear to win impressively.

Lisa Ryan said it had been a super win by Delightfull Tammy.

“Early I thought holy crap, this is not how I had envisaged the race developing,” Ryan said.

“I gave her time before going forward and she was comfortable when I got forward.

“Coming to the home turn I was aware Lolita was coming quickly and thought we might be in trouble, but my filly extended and won impressively.”

Owners Adam, Ben and Terry Cormack brought Delightful Tammy to Adelaide and gave her to Roseworthy trainer Toby Ryan to ensure she qualified to run in the Southern Cross Series later in the year.

In her first run in SA, the filly collected the SAHRC Derby, Saturday she added the Mermaid, now it is on to the $17,500 SA Oaks (1800m) on Saturday, November 11, then the Southern Cross heats and final at the end of November and early December.

While she has been winning over the 1800 metre trips, connections believe she will be even better suited by the 2230 metres of the Southern Cross.

Reeves Plains trainer-driver Ryan Hryhorec had a huge Saturday driving four winners and training three on the 11-race program.

But one of the winners has given the champion reinsman a potential problem come the SA Cup.

Hryhorec had his first drive for trainer Paul Cavallaro when he jumped into the sulky behind Artillery in the TAB Venue Mode Pace (2230m).

Having his first start back after a New South Wales campaign, Artillery ($2.30 fav) began fast from gate five, found the front and dominated the race winning by six metres from Assassinator ($2.80) with Rakero Storm ($5.50), 3-1/2 metres away third.

The five-year-old was perfectly rated by Hryhorec with a moderate 63 second first half of the last 1600 metres before sprinting home in 56.6 second last half.

Trainer Paul Cavallaro was delighted with the win.

“I thought he was a bit underdone and wanted him to have a comfortable experience and that is exactly what he got,” Cavallaro said.

“Ryan rated him brilliantly and Artillery sprinted home strongly.

“He will run again on Friday in a heat of the SA Cup and that should have him right for the final on the 28th.

“Ryan has first refusal again in the heat, and I would love him to stay through to the Cup.”

Hryhorec drove Tango Tara for trainer Andy Gath to win the Kadina Cup and automatically qualify for the SA Cup. With Artillery’s impressive victory, the driver could have a tough choice to make in the state’s richest race.

Miss Idaho, Aldebaran Stiles and Nicely Spoken were Hryhorec’s other winners, and he also trains the trio.

The trainer-driver said he has a good opinion of Miss Idaho which won the Les Sumner@The Globe Sunday October 15 2YO Pace (1800m).

Hryhorec took a trail early on Miss Idaho ($3.10 fav) before bringing her to the outside and sprinting home to win by 5-1/2 metres from Waitpinga Reactor ($18) with Lil Miss Crocker ($3.90), three metres away third.

He hopes she can prove among the best of her age in South Australia over the next few months.

Star three-year-old squaregaiter Aldebaran Stiles again beat the other horses in the King Of The North USA @ Llowalong Farms Trotters Mobile (2230m).

A well backed $1.80 favourite, Aldebaran Stiles showed great speed to trot to the lead and dictate with a 10-metre win from Piesridingshotgun ($15) with Winsome Ruby ($3.20) an eye-catching third, one metre away after being held up until very late.

Hryhorec said the main goal for the winner was the $12,500 SA Trotters Derby (2230m) at Globe Derby Park on Saturday, November 11.
