Zeus is the sky and thunder god in ancient Greek religion and tonight the sky opened up at Menangle just in time for Zeuss Bromac to upset his harness racing rivals in the $100,000 Group 1 Ainsworth Free For All.
Relishing the wet stormy conditions, Zeuss Bromac received a good run on the outer until the home turn where he angled out and came home with a lightning finish down the middle of the track to beat a handy field for trainer Paul Fitzpatrick and driver Gavin Fitzpatrick.
Kiwi mare Stylish Memphis ran home well for second and Triple Eight arrived late for third.
Zeuss Bromac (Bettor’s Delight) ran the 2400m distance in a mile rate of 1:54.1 with a slick last half in 55.4 seconds.
“I haven’t seen conditions like this,” said Paul Fitzpatrick.
“We could only watch the race on our phones as the vision in the stables went out.
“We couldn’t see much but knew they were getting a good run.
“This horse deserves this win – he was second in the Chariots, won a Breeders Crown and has been unlucky with draws.
“He’s only a little fella but a great horse.
“Hopefully we can get him into the Grand Circuit.”
