Hard-working Wagin breeder Kevin Spurr has a draft of five Shoobees Place youngsters in the Perth sale, spearheaded by two outstanding fillies.

Spurr said he expected his fillies out of NZ-bred mare Miss Taken and good producer Our Sibelia to be his most popular yearlings in 2025.
Lot 387 is a bay filly from Miss Taken (1.56.2, $25K), who won five of her 21 starts and was placed a further six times.
She is a half sister to Bet Away, who is the dam of NSW Waratah Stakes winning mare Punt Away (1.51.3, $123K).
This is the family of star Tasmanian youngster Count Karalta (2.00.1, $45K), who won nine races as a 2YO and 3YO and took out the Tasmania 4YO Championship the following season.
This filly has an interesting cross to US Hall Of Fame broodmare Three Diamonds. Shoobees Place’s maternal grandam is by Life Sign (a son of Three Diamonds) and Miss Taken’s paternal grandam Lifetime Success is also out of Three Diamonds.
Miss Taken won four races in WA and finished out of the top five just once in her 10 WA starts.
“Miss Taken was a speedy mare, she went 1.56 in NZ and I know trainer Matthew Scott was excited about her,” Spurr said.
“She came to Wagin and won by about 30m and then won at Northam in 1.59. Unfortunately, she was injured and didn’t race again.
“Her filly is an impressive type. She is the spitting image of her mother and I am hopeful she will get some attention from buyers.
“The other stand out filly, Lot 446, is out of Our Sibelia. She is the dam of Roman Art (1.56.4. $120K), who has won 13 races and is by Art Major, who is an Artsplace stallion the same as Shoobees Place – so the cross works.”
Our Sibelia is also the dam of promising gelding Roman Legion (1.56.8, $20K) and is a half sister to five winners, including Great Southern Derby victor Not Bad Johnnie (1.57.2, $173K).
Spurr will also offer a Shoobees Place colt, Lot 400, from well performed Bettors Delight mare Soho Jett (2.00.4, $64K), who has the same cross as NSW Derby winner Better Be The Best (1.49.8, $395K).
Seven-time winner Soho Jett is a grand daughter of Australia Oaks and Victorian Sires Stakes winner Newbold Penny (2.00.9, $175K).
Newbold Penny left outstanding gelding Penny Veejay (1.54, $387K), who won the Legends Mile and heat of the Interdominion in a sparkling open class career.
“He certainly has the breeding behind him,” Spurr said.
“But he is a little bit on the small side, which might go against him. He is a nice neat package though.”
Spurr said he has 11 weanlings by handsome stallion Goodtime Sammy but he would have to consider reducing numbers, after losing all his hay in the fire that destroyed his brother Tom’s farm in January.
“Tom had done extra hay for me this year. We had about 900 rolls that would have seen us through,” Spurr said.
“It all gone and we will have to find hay from other sources, which will be costly. I will probably have to reduce numbers at some stage.
“But the focus is now with the upcoming sale and the crop of terrific looking foals to come through next year.”
