“He’s a fighter; he’s a star! He’s scary at the moment the direction he is taking.”
They were the thoughts of respected racecaller Dan Mielicki as Bondi Lockdown produced a career best performance to win the $100,000 4YO Bonanza at Tabcorp Park Melton tonight.
The son of Somebeachsomewhere led throughout the Group 1 and rated 1:51.6, securing an invitation to the $250,000 Chariots Of Fire at Menangle on February 19.
Trainer-driver and owner Aaron Dunn admitted the performance of his star four-year-old was “a bit of a relief”.
“It was good to win, it was a bit of a relief,” said Dunn.
“I felt the nerves a bit tonight.”
Urged off the arm from barrier six, Bondi Lockdown rolled through the quarters in 27.8, 30.1, 27.6 and 27 seconds.
He held off Beyond Delight by more than two metres and Kimble was five metres from the winner in third place.
“He didn’t want to come back to me . . . he was on song tonight,” said Dunn.
“That’s probably the most I’ve chased him out of the gate.”
Bondi Lockdown takes into the Chariots Of Fire a record of 13 wins in 27 starts.
Just 20 minutes prior, at Menangle, Titian Raider won the Hondo Grattan Stakes, securing his spot in the Chariots Of Fire.
Trained by veteran horseman Harry Martin, the gelded son of Sunshine Beach also led all-the-way and rated 1:50.5.
He extended his record to 12 wins in 29 starts.
