For husband and wife harness racing training team Joe and Mary Rando it just does not get any better than winning two Inter Dominion trotting heats.
That is what they achieved tonight at Bathurst when their talented trotter Timothy Red made it back-to-back Inter Dominion heat wins and securing his spot in the $145,500 final at Menangle on December 11.
To top it off Timothy Red registered a mile rate of 1:56.2, a new track record for the trotters for the 1730m at Bathurst.
The four-year-old son of Muscle Hill also set an Australasian record for the 2400m when winning his Inter Dominion heat at Menangle on Saturday night in 1:57.1.
“He’s just a dream come true this horse,” said Joe Rando.
“He can come off any speed and loves this type of racing.
“He’s been above himself since his win on Saturday night, he’s just loving the series.
“He shouldn’t be here, he should be 12 months away . . . I just can’t believe it.”
That is because this was just Timothy Red’s 16th race start.
Driven by Cameron Hart, Timothy Red began from inside the second row and gained a nice trip through behind the leader Humble Ladd.
The speed was honest early with a lead time of 8.2 followed by the quarters in 29.2, 30.2, 28.6 and 28.7 seconds.
Once the sprint lane was open heading into the home turn, Timothy Red burst through to win over Maori Law, Pink Galahs and Humble Lad.
“He’s such a big strong fella,” said Hart.
“He was in behind the leader jogging.
“He didn’t have to do some of the work the others did but was still very impressive at the finish.
“He’s a nice horse, he has lovely manners and he will handle the 3009 metres of the final.”
Hart has now registered five wins on his seven drives behind Timothy Red.
