Goulburn trainer-driver Brad “Hollywood” Hewitt will be hoping that his open class pacer Taipo (American Ideal) can go one better in this Friday’s $60,000 TAB Cherry City Cup at Young’s huge Carnival Of Cups harness racing program following his brave second placing in the feature at Cowra on November 12.
Drawn on the backline in Cowra’s Lachlan Valley Cup, Taipo ended up facing the breeze, an arduous task in track record time over the 2520 metre journey.
Yet despite being beaten a fair way by the winner Pas Guarantee, the gelding produced a tough and creditable effort.
After the race, Hewitt said he was ecstatic with his horse’s performance and felt that the awkward draw certainly hampered his chance of giving the winner a run for his money.
“We simply had to do too much work in the Cowra race, working three wide early to be outside the leader,” said Brad.
“But I was really proud of his effort to stick on for second.
“He pulled up well after the race and his trackwork has been strong in the meantime, so he deserves to have another crack at the Carnival Of Cups race at Young on Friday night.
“The conditions for this race are similar to the Cup at Cowra so I concede that he is almost certain to draw the backline once again.”
And this has been the case with Taipo, drawing barrier nine in Young’s feature race, however, will follow out the No.2 horse, Allstarzzz Frankie.
