Hryhorec on a Cups roll

Another Cup, another win, but while there is more to it than that, it does appear to be quite elementary for leading harness racing trainer Ryan Hryhorec.

Changing its cup format this season, Harness Racing SA announced the various provincial features will double as heats for the South Australia Pacing and Trotting Cups on April 30 with a similar scheme also being conducted for the state’s Derby, with the events restricted to stock trained within the state.

As it stands four Trotters cups have been run with Hryhorec winning them all.

Capturing the first two with Mass Destruction, Hryhorec has won the next pair with C K Spur, including Port Pirie’s flagship event during the weekend.

“I didn’t realise until last week when someone mentioned it that there had been three cups and I’d won them all,” Hryhorec said.

“I’d just been more focused on the races and the next one to come to really put that together.

“Now it’s four which is something to be pleased about.

“I don’t know how long the winning streak can keep going, but I’ll enjoy it while I can.”

With Hryhorec in the cart C K Spur overcame a 40-metre back mark to rate 2:03.2 over 2530 metres as Millys Magic and Mass Destruction filled the placings.

“As good as it is to keep winning you have to start worrying about the handicaps,” Hryhorec said. “He got pushed back to 40 for this race, and although he won, it was only a small field of seven.

“If his handicap gets bigger again, and he’s facing a full field, it will be a lot more difficult to see him win.”

Planning to bypass the Mount Gambier Cup in a fortnight, Hryhorec has set his sights on next month’s Victor Harbor Cup.

“I haven’t totally ruled it out, but at this stage I don’t think it is worth heading to Mount Gambier,” Hryhorec said.

“I’ll probably keep an eye on the nominations and then make a decision.”
