The $75,000 Nutrien AG Globe Derby for three-year-old colts and geldings produced a standout performance from Hungry Hippo, who scored decisively in a mile rate of 1:57.3.

By the exciting young stallion Stay Hungry out of Ashuras Beau, Hungry Hippo was bred locally by Brooke Hammond and offered at the 2023 Nutrien Tasmanian Yearling Sale. He was knocked down for $41,000 to Summit Bloodstock and Aaron Bain Racing.
Ashuras Beau’s family carries notable depth, with her grand dam Gorse Bush being the dam of champion pacer Beautide.
Summit Bloodstock’s Jamie Durnberger-Smith admitted he wasn’t present at the Tasmanian sale when Hungry Hippo was purchased.
“We’ve only ever bought two horses without inspecting them—him and one other—and both have worked out okay,” he said. “We’re not big on pedigrees. We use an algorithm and only really look at the page once we’ve identified the yearlings we’re likely to bid on.”
Durnberger-Smith was full of praise for the Tasmanian system:
“Tassie is one of the most forward-thinking states right now. The prize money structure is most appealing.”
He also highlighted the state’s breeding incentives, including the first win bonus and the additional $5,000 bonus for sales graduates winning as two-year-olds.
Looking ahead, breeder Brooke Hammond will present a half-sister to Hungry Hippo by Downbytheseaside at next year’s Nutrien Tasmanian Sale on February 14, as part of her draft of five yearlings.
