An outside back row draw and sizzling last half still wasn’t enough to stop superstar Ladies In Red from winning her three-year-old fillies’ Vicbred semi-final in jaw-dropping fashion at Melton on Wednesday night.
Driver David Moran sent the Emma Stewart-trained multiple Group 1-winning filly to the spot outside the leader shortly after the start, and despite a tough trip parked to Joanna (Jackie Barker) and rapid closing quarters of 27.3sec and 27.0sec, she wore down her stablemate in the closing stages to prevail by a head on the line.
“She just takes that next level when she needs to – she’s one in a million really,” Moran said.
“She had a pretty easy run last week, so she probably did need a bit of a blowout tonight. It probably wasn’t the ideal blowout, but she’ll top up pretty good from that and she’ll be mighty hard to beat next week.”
Runaway Celebrity (Kate Gath) completed a Stewart-trained trifecta by running third before the stable produced the first four fillies over the line in the other semi.
Jason Lee got Rogue Wave through from the second row to find the early lead and it proved the winning move as she dictated out in front then held off favourite Beach Music (David Moran) by a half-neck at the post.
Treachery (Kerryn Manning) and Dangerous Hand (Chris Alford) got home for third and fourth respectively, but were beaten well over 10m.
While Ladies In Red clocked a 1:55.4min mile rate, Rogue Wave went a shade quicker in 1:55.2min.
