Local pacer Jorge Street (Captaintreacherous) surprised the mainland contingent when he scored a determined harness racing win in the Group 1 $150,000 Ladbrokes Tasmania Cup Final at Hobart last night.
Perfectly driven by Dylan Ford Jorge Street took the trail behind stablemate co favourite Mydadsaid who was well rated in the lead by Mitch Ford.At one stage the two front runners had a decent break before coming back to the bulk of the field.
James Herbertson aboard the other co favourite Heza Punk Rocker allowed his charge to settle back towards the middle of the field but he was still in front of the backmarkers. Given that the leading group were going well as the field approached with over a lap to travel Herbertson had to make his run in the straight for the bell. As a result he gave a trail to those behind.
Although Heza Punk Rocker continued to grind away he was under pressure. Jorge Street who had the run of the race sprinted quickly at the top of the straight to put the issue beyond doubt and he drew away from Mydadsaid and the Victorian Arggghhh who finished well for third.
Jorge Street rated 1.58.6 for the standing start trip of 2579 metres with quick final quarters of 28.5 and 28.8 seconds which made the task of the big field behind difficult.
Two starts back Jorge Street had scored a most impressive win in the Carrick Cup before finishing a close second to Magician in his heat a week ago.
The race was a training triumph for Brighton based trainer Tammy Langley who prepared the quinella when Mydadsaid battled on for second placing.
The Rattray trained pair Star Major and Magician didn’t have the best of luck from their 20 metre handicap and were never really in the hunt.
