A carefully planned collection of ‘black type’ mares from New Zealand to boost their broodmare band more than a decade ago is bearing fruit for respected Serpentine breeders Dr Trevor and Colleen Lindsay.
“We started out by going to NZ to buy well bred yearling fillies and mares,” Colleen said. “The best one we bought was Bettor Cover Lover. She won a million dollars.”
The 2023 season was a particularly successful year with Menemsha notching up dual top flight victories in the Group 1 $215,000 Westbred Classic and the Group 2 $100,000 The Pearl, Mighty Ronaldo took out of the $300,000 Fremantle Cup and Beyond The Sea won the Group 2 $100,000 Norm’s Daughter Classic.
The trio were all nominated for WA Horse of the Year Awards.
The Lindsay’s won the coveted WA Breeder of the Year Award for 2023 presented by the WA Standardbred Breeders Association.
Not surprisingly, 10 of the 12-strong entry of Karnup Racing in the Australian Pacing Gold sale at Magic Millions, Perth on Sunday, March 3 are out of mares bred on the other side of the ‘ditch’.
Colleen said five colts from the draft are outstanding. They have all been bred and raised on the Lindsay’s lush 160 acre property at Serpentine, 50 kilometres south-east of Perth.
Spearheading the entry is Lot 442, a Poster Boy half-brother to Menemsha and the Westbred Mares’ Classic and Village Kid Sprint winner Bettor’s Gem, dam of the Pearl Classic victor Swingband.
“He’s a beautiful colt, typical of the Poster Boy’s,” Colleen said.
Lot 433, an American Ideal colt from the Somebeachsomewhere mare Coopers Beach NZ, a half-sister to the Breeders Crown champion Devil Dodger ($724,666) and The Devil’s Own ($448,792), is regarded by the Lindsay’s as their “favourite colt”.
“He’s got two siblings and they’re both winners. Coopers Ideal won the last two-year-old race of the season,” Colleen stated.
Lot 405, a nice Downbytheseaside half-brother to the Westbred 3YO Classic placegetter Our Sandy Shore and the AGP Sales Classic qualifier Winter Wonder, hails from a top NZ family. His dam is a sister to the Victoria Cup winner Bettor’s Strike and a half-sister to two NZ Group winners.
Lot 464 is one of only two colts from the first crop of the Bettor’s Delight double millionaire Bettor’s Wish in the WA catalogue. A well put together youngster, he’s a half-brother to three two-year-old winners and from the same family as the NZ superstars Changeover and Chokin.
Another impressive Poster Boy colt from the Lindsay draft is Lot 517, a colt from the Rock N Roll Heaven mare Rocknroll Dreams, whose dam, Katesplace, is out of the dual Oaks winner and Auckland Cup heroine Kate’s First.
Other colts from the Lindsay consignment are Lot 414, a big, strong Always B Miki out of a sister to Bettor Cover Lover; Lot 412, an American Ideal out of a Christian Cullen mare from the family of the WA Lord Mayor’s Cup and Parliamentarian’s Cup winner Glenledi Chief; Lot 541, a strongly built Bettor’s Delight brother to the Sales Classic 3YO victor Typhoon Tiff; and Lot 473, a Downbytheseaside half-brother to the six-time NZ Group 1 winner and 3YO Filly of the Year The Orange Agent.
The Lindsay’s are also offering three superbly bred fillies headed up by Lot 469, a , well put together, beautifully natured Poster Boy half-sister to the WA Champagne Classic winner Bet The House.
Lot 539, a big, strong Always B Miki from the Mach Three mare The Boulevard NZ, is “probably our best looking filly, according to Colleen. Her dam, The Boulevard NZ, is a half-sister to the top flight WA racemare The Parade and belongs to the same tribe as the great Auckland Reactor.
The other filly is an athletic type by the WA Pacing Cup and Golden Nugget winner Soho Tribeca out of the Live Or Die mare Smart Design NZ, who is a close relative of the crack racemare Kamwood Laughter and the cup class pacer Pete’s Said So. She is listed as Lot 531.
