Kosimo back in owners care

After being placed in eight metropolitan races across Victoria this year, Major Bronski gelding Kosimo has returned to Tasmania to spell and is back in the care of his harness racing owner Mark Jones.

But after a look at the race program, Jones saw a suitable no more than eight-lifetime win race in Hobart on Sunday night and has decided to give the multiple Melton Free For All placegetter one more start for his current preparation.

“He has come back for a spell and we saw this no more than eight-lifetime win race, so he will go there, head to the paddock for a month off on Monday, and then we will jog him back up and send him back to Victoria,” explained Jones.

Jones sent Kosimo to Victoria when Tasmanian racing was shut down during Covid in 2020, where he won in 1m 55.5s at Bendigo in May 2020.

After a preparation back in Tasmania which included being runner-up in the three and four-year-old Tasbred Finals, Jones decided to send the pacer back to Victoria and is delighted that the pacer can mix it in open class company.

“He has improved with age, but he has always had speed.

“He did run second in the three and four-year-old sires, but he can mix it with the best of them over there at the moment, but he doesn’t like winning,” said Jones about the winner of eight races, who has been amongst the minor placings on 39 occasions.

Jones has a lot of respect in Sunday’s race for multiple Menangle winner Boom from the in-form Todd Rattray stable.

“Boom has got gate speed but we will go forward. We have been racing in those harder races every week in Melbourne, so he is fit,” said the trainer, who has booked his son Malcom for the drive.

Jones is also represented in the race by Nova Baxter, who Kayleb Williams will drive.

“She didn’t get clear running (last start).

“She is capable of running third in that race.

Meanwhile, this year’s Jane Ellen winner, Biglittlesis, also from the Jones stable, lines up in the $14,000 Leis, restricted to Tasbred fillies and mares, and is selected by the lowest number of wins.

“She has been a bit disappointing, but we will drive her a bit differently this week.

“I think she will be better this week, but her main aim is the Granny Smith.

“I think we will only be running for place money, as those ones of Rohan Hillier’s go pretty good,” said the trainer.

Sunday’s nine-race card commences at 17:01.
