Brilliant mare La Serena kept her unbeaten record this season in tact and completed a notable double for her sire Quaker Jet when she won harness racing’s Group 2 $30,000 Vicbred Platinum Trotting Mares Sprint Championship at Melton on Friday night (February 4).
The five-year-old worked to the front in the middle stages and proceeded to run her nine talented rivals off their legs, rating a career-best 1:56.8 over 1720 metres with the last half in 57.2 seconds.
La Sarena, who is out of a Pine Chip mare, has now won eight races and $63,370 in stakes.
Earlier in the night Night Whisperer, one of the same crop of Quaker Jet as La Serena, scored a thrilling win in a 1:59.1 rate to lift his earnings over the $50,000 mark.
Chateaubriant, a gelding by Used To Me, maintained his devastating form with a runaway win in the Canberra Trotters Cup on Sunday night (February 6). The six-year-old has won five out of his seven starts this season.
Orlando Storm (by Orlando Vici) won her 10th race and took her earnings to beyond $80,000 at Canberra recently.
Champion European sire Love You enjoyed a very successful week both on and off the track.
He sired three ānewā three-year-old winners in Hephaestus Phoenix (Kilmore), Dream Of You (Auckland) and Con Grazia Love (Cambridge Raceway), while his brilliant daughter Queen Elida won the Vancleve Award for Australian 3YO Trotting Filly of the Year.
