It’s been a huge week for harness racing driver Cameron Hart and an even bigger 24 hours.
After competing in New Zealand’s biggest races, the NZ Cup and NZ Free-For-All and finishing runner up both times with Majestic Cruiser, Hart was at the fore when back on home soil on Saturday night (Nov. 12).
After facing some travelling difficulties heading home from NZ, Hart made it back on time to partner Bling It On filly Madrid in the NSW Breeders Challenge Blue Final at Menangle, adding another Group 1 to his glowing record.
“I just have to pinch myself sometimes that I get to sit behind these horses,” said Hart.
“I don’t take it for granted at all, I’m just enjoying the ride.”
Madrid was the $1.40 favourite for the $100,000 feature and Hart drove her like one.
The 23-year took her straight to the lead from barrier six and after a leisurely first half of 28 and 29.8 seconds, Hart slipped Madrid more rein where she clocked the last two sectionals in 27.1 and 27.5.
Madrid’s nearest rival was Ideal In Dreams more than 13m away in a mile rate of 1:52.4.
MADRID REPLAY
“She has been such a great filly and it’s nice to get a Group 1 at the end of her preparation,” said Hart.
“She has been racing well this three-year-old season but just hasn’t been able to crack a Group 1.”
Madrid is the richest progeny of Bling It On and this victory pushed her earnings to $306,574 that she has obtained in her 13 wins and four placings in her 20 starts.
