Doug and Bernie Hewitt combined to take out the first of the Group Two $100,000 Cobbitty Equine NSW Breeders Challenge 2YO Finals for the fillies with Lady Kingsclair on a massive night of New South Wales harness racing.
The daughter of Modern Art was away brilliantly from barrier seven for regular pilot, Doug Hewitt, finding the lead before handing up to the second favourite, Stylish Lazarus and Jack Trainor with a little over a lap to run.
The daughter of Lazarus looked to be doing her work well in front, and with little pressure applied down the back, Trainor pinched a 30.4 second quarter and appeared to be stacking them up nicely for the run home.
Race favourite, Aromet Girl (Alta Christiano) and Cameron Hart, were obliged to sit parked throughout but upon entering the straight laid down the gauntlet and halfway to the line got the measure of Stylish Lazarus.
Having smoked the pipe throughout, the biggest danger to the favoured pair was in the hands of Doug Hewitt who extricated Lady Kingsclair from an awkward spot and presented her for the last say at them.
Once the pair found clear air, Lady Kingsclair unwound stylishly to win the Group Two feature going away, much to the delight of Hewitt who pumped a clenched fist as they crossed the line.
Lady Kingsclair paced the mile in a slick 1:54.0 to extend her record to four wins from just five race day starts for owners P R White, M W Jones, L White, K Butler, C G Hewitt.
The daughter of Modern Art is the first foal from the Rock N Roll Heaven mare, Valtona, the winner of seven races from 47 starts. Her breeder, Paul Carmody will be licking his chops at the prospect of having a yearling full sister to the now Group Two winner waiting in the wings.
