Move works wonders for trotting mare

Life in South Australia certainly agrees with Majestic Son mare Euryphaessa.

Sent across from Victoria in search of easier options, Euryphaessa trounced her rivals at harness racing’s Globe Derby track on Saturday.

Rating 2:02.9 for the 2230-metre stand, Euryphaessa is unbeaten from two starts for local trainer Ingrid Smith.

Euryphaessa was previously trained by former ‘Croweater’, Kylie Sugars, who bred and part-owns the five-year-old.

“She’s come here because of the step down in class,” Smith’s husband-driver, David said.

“Plus her national rating goes down with our system here and she has the mares’ allowance as well, which gives her a big boost.

“In Victoria she was racing against horses which are three and four classes above what she won against last night.”

Leading throughout from the pole, Euryphaessa strolled to a 10-and-a-half metre win from Hammers Law.

Muscletonian was a metre away third after coming from a 30-metre back mark.

EURYPHAESSA REPLAY

Euryphaessa’s success was the opening leg of a double for David, who also combined with the Mal Bagnato-trained Lenny Tee to cause a minor upset.

Trailing the pacemaker before being angled into the sprint lane, Lenny Tee beat $1.10 favourite, Fireball, and Rock To Success in 2:00.1 over 1800 metres.

“His win wasn’t exactly a surprise to me,” David said. “He’s in top form and had two wins and a second from his three previous starts.”
