Neilson and Wilson partnership rewarded for their efforts

Karma came back to leading horsewoman Jill Neilson in a positive manner during the weekend.

Neilson recently spent almost two weeks doing charity work as part of the Cows for Cambodia program before being rewarded with a feature harness racing win at Globe Derby on Saturday night.

Cambodia is one of the poorest countries in the world, where the majority of rural families dream of owning a cow, but the reality is most will never afford one.

The brainchild of South Australian media personality Andrew “Cosi” Costello, Cows for Cambodia provides families with a pregnant cow, which they must look after and when it has the calf they keep it and return the cow.

Joined by close friend and fellow trainer Leah Holman, Neilson also took part in the ‘rice run’ which saw the pair travel to communities to help feed the needy.

“It was a heartwarming experience,” Neilson said. “There is so much poverty everywhere and charities such as Cows for Cambodia are working hard to make a difference.”

Travelling home while the Globe Derby program was being conducted, Neilson missed the opportunity to watch her talented filly, Skew Wiff (Centurion Atm), capture a Southern Cross Final.

Leading throughout from barrier two, Skew Wiff scored by four-and-a-half metres from Hayoak.

Also co-trained by Neilson in partnership with Katie Wilson, Miss Fortune Atm, was 80 metres away third.

Driven by Wayne Hill, Skew Wiff rated 2:03.2 over 2230 metres, taking her record to six wins and three placings from 12 starts for earnings of $24,161.

“I tried to watch races wherever I could find wifi while we were away, but I didn’t get to see her race,” Neilson said. “It was a great surprise when I found out she’d won.”
