The odd one out among his harness racing stablemates heading to Globe Derby tomorrow night, Uncle Chan (American Ideal) could be the surprise package worth following.
Prepared by prominent trainer Luke O’Neill, Uncle Chan is one of nine members of the barn ready for action.
O’Neill’s crew includes four runners in the first event, a pair in the third and another two in the fifth.
Those eight are part of O’Neill’s ever growing squaregaiter squad, while Uncle Chan is in the minority at the property as a pacer!
Successful during his last two outings, the son of American Ideal is engaged in the Veterinary Surgeons Cup, where he has drawn the inside of the second row.
Despite the awkward starting position, Uncle Chan is primed to play a role in the finish according to O’Neill.
“He is in super form and is ready to do it again,” O’Neill said. “His work has lifted in the last couple of weeks along with his confidence.
“This is a rise in class for him and he’s drawn poorly, but he is in great condition and only needs an even crack at them.”
Elsewhere on the card O’Neill has Muscle Miss and Majestic Summer in the South Australia Trotters’ Derby, with the duo drawn gates two and three.
Majestic Summer was third in last weekend’s Trotters’ Oaks, while Muscle Miss broke stride after contacting a sulky, losing all chance, in the same event.
“They’ve drawn well and should go well enough,” O’Neill said. “Same with Uncle Chan, it is a stronger field this week, but they’ll be doing their best.
“Win, lose or draw though, they’ll head to the paddock after this.”
