Pangrazios align with Maori family

When harness racing’s Rochester horseman Neville Pangrazio says he loves the “Maori” family, he means it with a passion.

“It’s a great family, a fantastic breed.

“I love it and everyone knows it,” he says.

A glance at the lots he and his family have going to the Nutrien Equine Standardbred Yearling Sale at Oaklands Junction on Sunday, April 3, reinforces this.

They have had enormous success breeding with descendants of great mare, Maori Mara – paternally through Tennotrump (A Go Go Lauxmont US) and maternally with a variety of mares, and Pangrazio is confident their offerings at the Melbourne will maintain the high standards they have built up over three decades.

Pangrazio said his “love affair” with the Maori breed went back to the 1990s.

“I was watching the races at Moonee Valley with my Dad (Michael) and Noopy Kiosk was racing.

“I said we just have to get one of this breed.”

Noopy Kiosk was a champion trotter through the mid and late 1990s, winning 34 races and earning $320,000.

He won the Victoria Trotters Derby and Vicbred Super Sires finals as a two, three and four-year-old.

The key for the Pangrazios was that Noopy Kiosk was out of Maori Trump, a daughter of Maori Miss – the dam of the great Maori’s Idol.

Pangrazio said it was not long after that Maori Annette – out of Maori Mia, another daughter of Maori Miss – was advertised for sale in the Trotting Weekly.

“Dad’s words were “we’ll buy her even if she has only three legs”.

And so the association which continues with Neville and his wife Louise; his parents Michael and Faye of Staffordshire Park fame; and his parent in-laws Malcolm and Joan Shaw began.

“She (Maori Annette) was a beautiful black mare by French Chef.”

Her first two foals for the Pangrazio did not get to the races, but each filly did produce a winner.

The next one – a colt by Malhana Gindin – would be something special. Broke As Usual won 32 races for $428,000 in stakes.

Maori Annette left two more winners and the “Maori” journey was well and truly on its way for the Pangrazios.

Their next big opportunity came not too much later when broodmare Maori Trump became available through a clearance.

Pangrazio said while she was 18 years of age, it was too good a chance to pass up.

“She cost $30,000 – a record price for a broodmare at the time.”

While it was a throw of the dice given her age, it would prove to be a bonanza with Maori Trump producing Tennotrump, which would win 17 races, earn $179,000 and go onto to successfully stand at stud at Staffordshire Park.

Here’s how Pangrazio sums up the next generation of their breeding venture going under the hammer on Sunday.

He describes the lots as providing something for everyone.

LOT 124 MAJESTIC SON Ca-ANNIES LAST (Armbro Invasion US) Filly (vendor Neville Pangrazio)

Annies Last was the last foal out of Maori Annette and managed to get one win in a limited race career.

This is her third foal, with her first having been placed twice.

In addition to whatever she shows on the track, this filly has great potential as a broodmare with Maori Mia (dam of winners) her granddam and Maori Miss (dam of Maori’s Idol) her third dam.

LOT 187 TENNOTRUMP-LU LU LOLA (Crazed US) Filly (Staffordshire Park and Jamie Fry)

This is the first foal of unraced mare Lu Lu Lola.

She is out of Jalubro (Tarass Boulba Fra), a daughter of Majestic Maori (Thor Hanover US) and granddaughter of Maori Mara (Bravado Hanover US-Maori Miss).

With Tennotrump as her sire, this filly offers strong “Maori” cross.

Majestic Maori is the dam of Maori Sunshine (Sundon US), which in turn is the dam of four winners including two-time group 1 winner Moonshine Linda (Majestic Son Ca).

“She’s a lovely filly, exceptionally bred and well put together.

“She could be a bargain as a future broodmare.”

LOT 239 MAJESTIC SON Ca-SHESASUNDON (Sundon US) Filly (Joan and Malcolm Shaw, and Louise Pangrazio)

This is the second foal of Shesasundon, which is out of five-time winner Yankee Sister (Muscles Yankee US).

Yankee Sister is out of Maori Princess, making this filly closely related to Lot 198.

“She’s a beautiful filly, well put together.”

LOT 166  MAJESTIC SON Ca- GLORIADON (Sundon US) Colt (Staffordshire Park)

Glory Lass was secured by the Pangrazios as broodmare after leaving three foals by Tennotrump – all winners including Tendaho (13 wins, 108,000), My Dads A Ten (3 wins) and No Trumps No Glory (10 wins, $57,000) – and then produced Gloriadon.

“Gloriadon showed potential, but was a handful and didn’t manager to get a win.”

This colt is Gloriadon’s third foal.

“He looks a really nice type and I believe will be affordable.”

LOT 170 MAJESTIC SON Ca-Hilary Hill (Muscle Hill US) Filly (Staffordshire Park)

This is the unraced Hilary Hill’s first foal.

She is out of Box Brownie (SJs Photo US), which produced five winners, with two-time group 1 winner Brunelleschi (Tennotrump) the best with 16 wins for $225,000.

LOT 195 ROYALTY FOR LIFE US-MIRANDA MAID (Muscles Yankee US) Colt (Staffordshire Park)

Miranda Maid is another daughter out of Box Brownie (see Lot 170) and this is her first foal.

This colt’s third dam is Midnight Till Dawn (RCs Dee Jay US), the dam of Stoned At Midnight (Keystone Salute US) 12 wins, $67,000; and Action After Dark (Keystone Salute US) 17 wins, $161,000.

Unfortuanatley Neville & Louise had to withdraw MAJESTIC SON Ca-MODERN MAORI (Sundon US) Colt (Joan and Malcolm Shaw, and Louise Pangrazio), but he is something special and would be happy to take enquiries on him.

This colt is a half-brother to two group 1 winners – Needabacardi (Bacardi Lindy) and Kyvalley Clichy (Angus Hall).

“This (colt) could be something special.”

Modern Maori is a daughter of Maori Princess (Entrepreneur US), which was the dam of seven winners, including all-time great Sumthingaboutmaori (Pine Chip US) 31 wins, $460,000.

Maori Princess is out of Maori Trump, making her a half-sister to Noopy Kiosk (Paulsboro US) and Tennotrump.

NEVILLE and LOUISE PANGRAZIO have also prepared LOT 190 for Roy Spencer.

WISHING STONE US-MAORI APLOMB (Majestic Son Ca) filly

This is the third foal out of Maori Aplomb, which an unraced daughter of Maori Moon (Entrepreneur US).

Unfortunately her previous foals have died before getting the racetrack.

Maori Moon produced four winners, including Master Maori (Extrovert US) 26 wins, $203,000; and Tricky Interest (SJs Photo) 14 wins, $83,000.

The filly’s second dam is 14-time winner Maori’s Glory, which left successful sire Wind Cries Maori NZ and third dam is Maori Mia (Kentucky US), a daughter of Maori Miss.
