Powerful win by eight-year-old mare

Eight-year-old mare Modern Power proved too good for her rivals when taking out the Cavalor Equicare Pace (2090m) in Hobart on Friday night.

The $6.50 chance stepped well in the standing start event to lead, with driver Mitch Ford electing to hand up when challenged at the 1200m.

Modern Power was able to use the sprint lane in the home straight, where she sprinted home best to rundown Keayang Fitzy ($3.60), who went on to win Sunday’s Burnie Cup by 1.1m, with Denwen Dancer ($10) a further 7.6m away third in a mile rate of 2:02.4s.

“She was good. She stepped well, which she has been of late. She did have some issues early on of being in season and that sort of stuff, but has been racing well of late,” Ford said about the win of the Tammy Langley-trained pacer.

“We got the right trip, and when Rodney (Ashwood, driver of Sharkattack) got running down the back, I knew there would be a few found wanting late, and I thought I could swoop on them late; it was just a matter if I could get there in time.

“I think she was going to have a week or two off now, and it might take her a few runs, but with a trip like that, I think she will be competitive in some open class races going forward,” the driver added.

The win completed a driving treble for Ford, who was also suspended at the meeting.

He had success earlier in the program with four-year-old gelding Jorge Street ($2.40 fav) in the Prydes Easifeed Pace (1609m).

“He is a big gangly horse, and once he puts it together, I think he will be one of the better horses in the stable going forward.

His other winner was the Wayne Yole-trained Sharmey ($6.50), who recorded a three-meter win in the Racing Connect Pace (2090m).

“He was good last start when he sat in the breeze, and he got a good run on Friday,” Ford said.
